Revival Soy Doctor Q&A's
Name: Ami

Question:
Dear Doctor,

I am from the Philippines, 48 years old, and I think I am perimenopausal, although my doctor doesnt think so. He thinks I am stressed.

I am interested in the Soy Revival. However, I have uterine fibroids which I heard are caused by estrogen dominance.

Will the use of Soy Revival worsen my fibroids?

I would highly appreciate your kind and immediate reply.

Ami

Answer:
Dear Ami,

Thank you for contacting me about #1 Doctor-recommended Revival Soy protein supplement. Our mission is to help others live a life they love with good nutrition, education and medical research :)

Of course, please discuss the information supplied in this email with your physician.

While the exact cause of uterine fibroids is not completely clear, you are correct that estrogen is known to trigger fibroids and may cause them to grow more quickly. To our knowledge, there is no evidence that soy consumption will worsen fibroids. However, there is very little information in the medical or scientific literature regarding soy consumption and uterine fibroids.

As you may know, uterine fibroids are one of the main reasons that women elect to have hysterectomies. A recent study from Japan (Nagata et al., 2001) reported that mid-level soy isoflavone consumption was associated with reduced numbers of hysterectomies. Another study from Japan tested the effects of a synthetic isoflavone (Ipriflavone) in women taking leuprolide for uterine fiboroids and found that this synthetic ipriflavone did not cause any changes to the reduction in fibroid size resulting from the medication (Somekawa et al., 2001).

Nagata C, Takatsuka N, Kawakami N, Shimizu H. Soy product intake and premenopausal hysterectomy in a follow-up study of Japanese women. European Journal of Clinical Nutrition 2001; 55:773-777.

Somekawa Y, Chiguchi M, Ishibashi T, Wakana K, Aso T. Efficacy of Ipriflavone in preventing adverse effects of leuprolide. Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism 2001; 86:3202-3206.

While these studies are interesting and suggest that soy may not negatively effect uterine fibroids, the results are not definitive and will require more study before much is known about the effects of soy on uterine fibroids.

We would strongly suggest that you discuss your interest in adding soy to your diet and your concerns regarding your uterine fibroids with your physician who will be better able to guide you.
