Dr. Alan Altman's Archives Q&A's
Name: lisa

Question:
is evista a better alternative than premarin which I have been taking for 19 yrs.

Answer:
It really depends on the reason you are taking it. Premarin is a traditional estrogen while Evista is a selective estrogen. With premarin, if you have your uterus, you have to take a progesterone, while with Evista you don't. Premarin works in all the good places in the body where you want estrogen to work, while Evista is not particularly wonderful for bladder problems, vaginal atrophy, but blocks the effects of estrogen in the breasts. For help making your decision, try reading Dr. Steven Goldstein's book on Evista called The Estrogen Alternative.
