Medical Doctor Q&A's
Name: Haley

Question:
I had a child in october of last year and before I had him I had noticed some spots on my neck (blotches) they were just darker than my skin. Never iching or bothering me unless people kept asking what is wrong with me. Now that I had my son and I had merina (IUD) inserted into me the spots on neck are spreading so I researched it and the only thing I could come up with is melasma. Would an IUD cause that to occur. Cause what I read said that melasma it caused by pregnancy or contraceptives. Would you please help me narrow this down. Haley

Answer:
The blotches are due to increased melanin in the skin and can be caused by pregnancy or the IUD which contains synthetic progesterone. For treatment, you need to consult with a dermatologist.
