Dr. Alan Altman's Archives Q&A's
Name: JJ

Question:
I have been having a lot of heart palpitations and PVCS for the past 5 months along with a long list of other perimenopause complaints. I've been noticing that when I eat a high sodium meal that my heart races a little more. Is this my imagination or is my body a little more sensitive to salt right now. Thanks.

Answer:
I think your body might be a little more sensitive to having the changes in your heart rate, and possibly the salt can increase that. I think the underlying factor here is that the same thing what causes palpitations in perimenopausal and postmenopausal women, namely the change or alterations in estrogen levels. Heart palpitations, in any case, are a well known symptom of peri and post-menopause.
