Ask Dr. Townsend Q&A's
Name: shirley

Question:
I am well past menopause and my doctor has put me on estrogen cream for vaginal dryness. This stuff is so messy, I was wondering if there is anything else that I could use or am I at stuck with this solution?

Answer:
Shirley:

There is an estrogen tablet that you can use. With the estrogen cream it is only necessary to use about 1/8th of an applicator full [very small amount] twice a week at night. If you use more than that most of it runs out of the vagina and is indeed very messy. It will take about 3 weeks before one will note significant benefit from the estrogen. The estrogen not only helps the vagina but strengthens the tissues that support the rectum and urinary bladder. Vaginal estrogen should be used for the rest of your life as it will avoid the need for Depends when you get older.
