Ask Dr. Erika Q&A's
Name: LINDA

Question:
I am 45 and have been in menopause for approximately 5 years. I have not have a period since I was about 40. I have been taking a natural hormone from a doctor in my city. He has a nationwide clientle and I visit him once a year. My only problem is my memory. I was under great daily stress in 2000 through 2002. I develope huge memory issues that did get better once I was out from under the stress. However, I still experience above normal problems and all my friends and family often point this out to me in concern. I will ask the same question 2 or even 3 times to the same person, in the same hour. Recently, my regular doctor, did a MRI,EEG etc. And everything appeared normal. My 69 year old Father has Alzheimers so I very concerned that I might have it as well. Thank-you!

Answer:
Dear Linda:

Natural hormones will certainly help. But in addition you must take good care of yourself. That means eating foods high in protein and fish oils, exercising regularly and sleeping at least 7 hours a night. And the stress is a killer. You must make a serious effort to learn how to minimize its impact on you. Also, don't let people scare you by constantly pointing out what is wrong with you. Ask the ones who love you to reinforce you positively when you do remember things rather than making you feel crippled when you don't. Just because there is a family member with Alzheimer's doesn't mean you are next.

Keep busy and do things you like, don't sit idly watching TV or worrying. Participate in life now! Noone knows what will happen tomorrow!

Best wishes,
