Ask Dr. Erika Q&A's
Name: Paula

Question:
I am 41 and perimenopausal. I have had quite heavy bleeding with clotting for the past 2 weeks or so. This comes and goes every few weeks to a month or so. I am on the Kariva birth control pill and my midwife suggested that I take them continually (skipping the last row of pills) because I have really bad PMS symptoms during that time. In addition I have NO libido at all. At least I have the bleeding issue to keep my poor patient husband at bay! Your board is awesome. I don't feel like such a freak when I read what other women are going through. Thank you for what you are doing to help so many women.

Answer:
Dear Paula:

The first recommendation I would make is to stop the birth control pills. I agree you are having hormone imbalance problems, but unfortunately in my experience I have yet to see the woman who benefits from taking birth control pills. They only worsen the hormone imbalances at this point in your life. Going off the pill will help determine what your body is really doing and then we can fix that.

Meanwhile, take iron supplementation every day to help prevent you from getting anemic from all the bleeding.
I can help more. All you have to do is go to my website www.DrErika.com.

Best wishes,
