HELLO, I HAVE BEEN ON HRT WITH ESTROGEN AND PROGESTERONE PILL FORM FOR ABOUT 15years DUE TO A HYSTERECTOMY. Last MONTH I HAD TO CHANGE GYNECOLOGIST. The FIRST TIME I SEEN HER SHE DEMANDED THAT SHE WAS REMOVING THE PROGESTERONE FROM MY PILLS. She SAID I DID NOT NEED IT BECAUSE I HAD A HYSTERECTOMY AND THAT IS USED IF YOU STILL HAVE YOUR UTERUS. So I STARTED TAKING THE PILLS AND NOTICED HEADACHES, WHICH I THOUGHT WAS PROBABLY NORMAL AS A WITHDRAWL. After A COUPLE WEEKS THEY STARTED GOING INTO MORE OF A MEDIUM MIGRAINE WHICH I'VE HAD FOR A 10 DAYS. I've TAKEN OVER THE COUNTER MIGRANE MEDS WHICH HAVE DONE NOTHING. The DOCTOR SAID A PERSCPTION MIGRANE MED IS NOT GOING TO HELP WITH A WITHDRAWL HEADACHE.

Cheryl,
Great question. Really the only indication for synthetic progestins is for protecting the lining of the uterus or preventing dysuterine bleeding. This is why some doctors do not use progesterone in women who have had a hysterectomy. However, we have receptor sites for natural progesterone in our brains, breast and bones among other areas. When estradiol is replaced without progesterone, we are NOT balanced. Migraines can be a symptoms of this imbalance (estrogen without progesterone). In fact, this is believed to be one of the causes of Menstrual Migraines, migraines that occur during the menstrual cycle when progesterone is at it's lowest.
