Ask Dr. Denise Lamothe Q&A's
Name: JAN

Question:
Every year at this time I wonder why I can't lose weight in the winter. I drop 15 to 20LBS in the summer without even trying only to workout like a maniac in the winter to keep the weight gain under 10LBS. I eat the same year round. My workout logs say Im burning approximately the same number of calories. What gives?

Answer:
Our bodies go through many seasonal changes. On thing that we experience dates back to primitive times and that is the hibernation response. When the weather gets colder out bodies want to "fatten up" for the winter months in preparation for hybernation. Our metabolism prepares to conserve energy as well. Of course we don't curl up and sleep for months like some creatures but it is a good idea to ba aware of this phenomenon. It may have something to do with your perplexing situation. Best of luck....
