"The Silent Passage: Menopause"
Gail Sheehy.  NY: Random House
NY: Pocket Books,  revised 1998.

Another impressive book in the long and best-selling genre of "Passages" books by Power Surge guest Utilizing case studies, Gail Sheehy's NY Times best-seller, "Silent Passage" was probably the "first book to look at menopause in a non-clinical way. A very readable, non-medical flavor and tone. A "must read" for every woman in, or embarking upon the "fabulous fifties," and menopause, a passage once silent, but today an open discussion in groups such
as Power Surge.

Dr. Susan Love's The Hormone Book:
Making Informed Choices About Menopause.

Susan M. Love, M.D., with Karen
Lindsey. NY: Random House, 1998.

Dr. Susan Love calls Power Surge, "The first, best and most informative menopause site." Excellent information by the renowned breast surgeon, Dr. Susan Love, to help women "make informed choices about menopause."  A former Power Surge guest, there's not a question she won't tackle, and you can bet your bottom dollar she'll provide the  real facts about hormone replacement therapy, heart disease scares, osteoporosis, etc.  Dr. Love believes that, for
most women, the increase in breast cancer risk associated with taking hormones makes it worthwhile to explore natural methods unless one's quality of life is so diminished by menopause - then to take HRT only to get through the most difficult time.

The Pause:

A must-read first book on menopause from sexologist, and Power Surge guest, Lonnie Barbach, who offers a life-and sanity-saving guide for making the "third third" of life the most productive and fulfilling.  One of the special perks is the chapter for men to help them cope and understand. An open and frank discussion. It's a fact of life that women in their 40s and 50s go through menopause, and their significant others are going to be impacted as
well. Open discourse is important between partners, and Lonnie Barbach goes a long way to educating women, and the men who love them, about depression, rage, hot flashes, stress, sexuality, and hormones in a candid and very readable way.

Could It Be . . . Perimenopause?"
Steven R. Goldstein, M.D., Laurie Ashner
NY: Little Brown, 1998

"This clearly written and immensly readable book makes accessible to all women a wealth of information about this phase of feminine development. Dr. Goldstein and Ms. Ashner describe perimenopause in terms of the physiological changes that occur, and they explore with great sensitivity the effects that these changes can have on our emotions, thought processes and sexuality.  This information, combined with the practical, useful coping strategies they suggest, can be an enormously powerful tool for women to use in transforming their experiences of perimenopause."  -- Dr. Carla Solomon, Clinical Psychoanalyst.

This book contains invaluable information about hormone replacement therapy. However, Dr. Goldstein espouses the belief that phytoestrogens aren't useful to women in perimenopause, something with which Power Surge disagrees. In providing Internet resources, Power Surge is referred to in five pages of a review as the "Premier site for women in menopause."

With A Little Help From The Soybean
Julia Elliott
Published by SCB/J.Elliot
April 1997

"This book was born out of the need to pass along important information to people who are not happy with the cancer-causing preparations they are offered at menopause," says Power Surge guest," Julia Elliott. Women are experiencing many adverse side effects from synthetic hormones, which have led to finding an alternative, such as phytoestrogens, a plant form of estrogen found in the soybean.  In this, her  second book, Julia shares recipes you are
probably already preparing, you just make them healthier by modifying them with the soybean - an incredible source of natural phytoestrogens. Some of the valuable compounds, such as genistein, may be lost in during those procedures, according to some scientists.
